Therapeutic Support Groups

Support student mental health with therapeutic adventure groups

A New Form of Support

Project Adventure’s Therapeutic Support Groups use therapeutic adventure methods to provide a new form of support for students with mental health struggles, special needs, or social and emotional disabilities.

In one hour we can support up to 10 high-needs youth, multiplying your school’s capacity, and providing a unique way for students grades 6 and up to achieve their goals.

We observed clear benefits following our participation. Students demonstrated increased willingness to collaborate with peers, improved ability to manage frustration during challenging tasks, and greater confidence in taking appropriate risks. Just as importantly, the shared experience helped strengthen relationships between students and staff, reinforcing the sense of community and mutual respect that is central to our school’s mission.

How They Work

  • Groups are facilitated by a Project Adventure facilitator in partnership with a school counselor or equivalent. The counselor must be present for all sessions, but Project Adventure facilitators lead the Group.

  • Groups run for 8 or more sessions, typically once per week. One session is usually equivalent to one class period.

  • The facilitator utilizes games and group activities, guided discussion, and trauma-sensitive approaches.

  • Can include a trip to the Project Adventure challenge course or, in some cases, incorporate use of your course if you have one on-site.

  • Groups are capped at 10 participants. Ideal is 6-8.

  • Appropriate for grades 6-12 or post-secondary.

  • As part of your Multi Tiered System of Support (MTSS), Groups can be considered a Tier 2 or 3 intervention.

  • Work especially well with sub-separate programs, but can be adapted for any group.

  • Can align with students’ therapeutic or IEP goals.

  • Are excellent for students who struggle with traditional counseling, are active learners, or need an additional layer of social support.
