Choosing the best carabiner for the job is to balance pros and
cons while following accepted safety guidelines.Steel carabiners
are undoubtedly more durable, wear-resistant and versatile than
aluminum with a large penalty in weight. However, for most
challenge course programs, weight is much less important than
it is in traditional climbing or mountaineering. With proper
maintenance, steel carabiners will far outlast their aluminum
counterparts. With aluminum, you have more choices of type
and style of carabiner, such as two-stage locking mechanisms
and HMS (Münter Hitch-friendly) configurations. Examples of
where steel carabiners may be preferable to aluminum are:
connection between the K-2 Zip Pulley and lanyard, SAFER
Lanyard tail clips, rescue kit.
Choose from these carabiners for SAFER Lanyard tails or
connection between the K-2 Zip Pulley and lanyard. Do not use
for connection between climbers and the belay rope.

Kong Alpin Twist-Lock Anodized
Designed to be opened easily with one hand.
J71527 $22.00 Strength: 27kN Alpin Weight: 100grams |
The double locking mechanism on this carabiner provides a
secure closure that is very unlikely to come open when a rope or
other object rubs against the gate. Unlike single stage autolocking
carabiners, this carabiner may be used to connect a climber to
their belay rope. To ensure proper operation, these carabiners
should be kept clean and properly lubricated to ensure the proper
closure of the gate.

These have been the standard carabiners for belayer and climber
connections to belay ropes and anchors for years. The manual
(screw) locking system is very reliable and long lasting. Pear
shaped HMS carabiners have slightly less strength but larger gate
opening than D carabiners which facilitates connection to tied harnesses.
