Research and Administration Internship
The North Shore Independent School Sustainability Education Partnership
Project Adventure hosts an initiative called the North Shore Independent School Sustainability Education Partnership (NSSP). This partnership brings together faculty and administrators from independent schools across the North Shore to collaboratively strengthen sustainability education and practices.
Assumptions of this initiative:
Need: Ecological degradation and climate change are arguably the largest and most complex problems facing humanity today. To meet such formidable challenges our students need to develop new habits of mind that break free of traditional disciplinary thinking and embrace a systems-based, ecological approach to the world. Our students\' futures depend on a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of ecological, economic and cultural systems.
Active Student Involvement and Pedagogy: Students learn as much outside of the classroom about how to live and work as they do through the formal curriculum. Connecting the two provides a more authentic educational experience and promotes learning that will endure better over time. Developing leadership skills across the entire school organization, including student ownership and leadership for educational outcomes, is a key to success in the twenty-first century school.
Independent School Leadership: Given their human and financial resources and the independence to implement new and creative initiatives, independent schools have a unique opportunity and responsibility to address climate change and to model stewardship of natural resources and the environment.
Regional Cooperation: Sustainable solutions are regional solutions. There is a large opportunity for the North Shore independent schools to explore best practice together and collaborate to create better practice for sustainable education. Independent school’s intellectual, economic and ecological wealth combined with their relatively agile institutional structures give them a real opportunity to collaborate and lead their regions towards a sustainable future.
