The Challenge Course Elements

Tree Courses

Tree Courses

Trees provide a setting for challenge courses that is natural and provides protection from the elements. Our installation techniques are designed to ensure longevity of tree health. Trees have proven to adapt to the addition of bolts, staples and other hardware. A tree course can last well over ten years, but diligent care of the elements and the surrounding environment is vital.

A physical site evaluation is required to determine the feasibility and potential layout of tree courses.

Some feel that trees provide a superior medium for challenge courses. The setting is natural; the elements are more hidden and are generally more aesthetically appealing than other challenge course media. Trees also provide a comfortable, natural environment for programming as well as protection from rain, the heat of the sun and other weather extremes. Tree courses provide a rich opportunity for participants to appreciate and enjoy being in a comforting pristine setting, which often leads to an increased environmental awareness. Although the hardware used has some impact on tree health, our installation techniques are designed to ensure longevity. Our thirty-plus years of experience and affiliation with a number of arborists has shown that over time, trees adapt very well to the addition of bolts, staples and other hardware. A tree course can last well over ten years, but diligent care of the elements, trees and the surrounding environment is vital. Make PA your partner in keeping your course in tip top shape.

Pole Courses

Pole Courses

Utility pole challenge courses have many benefits including the ability to custom design for specific configurations or space sizes. Other advantages include longevity and lower maintenance cost than tree courses.

If you have an open space that is free of under- or above-ground utilities and rock outcroppings, we may be able to provide you with a proposal without doing an on-site evaluation.

If appropriate trees are not available and you want to run groups in the outdoors, a utility pole course will be your best choice. We can fit a standard layout or custom-designed pole course to any specific configuration you have in mind, in any area that is available. A pole course in a wooded setting blends the best attributes of both mediums. Some of the main advantages of pole courses are:

  • Longevity: pole courses generally last much longer than tree courses since they do not depend on tree health. Poles do not grow over hardware, disease, fall or die.
  • Lower maintenance costs: Over the life of the elements, pole courses are a better long-term investment, even though the initial cost is higher.
  • Freedom of design: Poles give you the greatest flexibility and variety of element configurations in meeting your program and site needs.
  • Targeted Designs: We have designed three standard pole packages to match our P.E. curriculum program designs. We also can design a pole course to maximize the use of any limited site while at the same time fitting particular program needs.
Combination Courses

Combination Courses

Many sites work well for combining trees and utility pole courses. If you have an open field running along a stand of trees, a utility pole and tree course combination can be an interesting and attractive option.

Indoor Courses

Indoor Courses

An indoor challenge course can keep your Adventure program alive all year round! We've installed indoor courses in urban areas where outdoor options are limited or to augment outdoor programs by providing winter or inclement weather options.

Prior to the installation of an indoor course, we will need to see digital photos of your facility. Please contact a customer service representative at Project Adventure for details on this type of evaluation. In some cases, we may need to do an on-site evaluation prior to installation.

Project Adventure has installed hundreds of indoor courses. We are the most experienced indoor installation experts in our industry. Our engineering expertise gives us the ability to communicate effectively with architects and structural engineers when designing and installing your course, as well as the vision and ability to design unique attachment systems to connect elements to a wide variety of different building and structures. Our expertise brings your program and curriculum in alignment with your new indoor challenge course.

An indoor facility can keep the adventure alive year-round! You may choose to install an indoor course:
  • If your outdoor options are limited
  • To augment your existing outdoor course
  • If time is a factor – you never have to leave your facility
  • To provide programming options during the winter months or inclement weather.

Most elements in indoor courses are vertical climbing elements; different from the traversing elements that are most common in outdoor courses. These elements can be conveniently raised out of the way using haul systems or removed in multi-use facilities. PA has developed many new and unique elements that work extremely well indoors; ask about the Swingshot, the floating Space Station Rappel, or the time-honored Eagle's Nest or Portable Pamper Pole.

Often the highlight of an indoor course is the Climbing Wall – either installed directly on cinder block or on more elaborate framed plywood-sheathed surfaces. Incorporated into climbing walls, we can install Rappel Stations and Trapeze Jumps.

Climbing Towers and Walls

Climbing Towers and Walls

Climbing towers are dramatic with thrilling opportunities for participants. Towers are the visual focal point of most challenge courses. We can custom design and install any variation to suit your specific program needs and goals. We offer unique forms that can incorporate rappel faces, overhangs, inclines, roofs, arêtes, dihedrals and chimneys. Let us design a tower that sets your course apart!

Climbing towers have an aesthetic and dramatic visual appeal. This "wow" factor has often garnered support from administration, donors and community members alike. Towers represent one of the fastest growing trends in the field and meet the needs of many schools, camps, resort and convention centers. Project Adventure's designs provide opportunities for a wide variety of climbing and rappelling experiences. We install climbing towers that are dramatic, fun to climb and programmatically relevant. Our timber and utility pole structures are a good mix of economic value and high quality materials. We offer our standard two, three and four pole designs to meet any budget. Our two latest designs, the Helix Tower and Wingback Tower, have met with extraordinary customer approval and excitement.
